John P. Miller Student Mentorship Program
Administered by the Atlanta Concert Band
Established in memorial to the musical legacy of John P. “Jack Miller
The John P. Miller student mentorship program's mission is to offer high school students an opportunity to perform with an adult community band, specifically, The Atlanta Concert Band.
The Atlanta Concert Band is a 65-piece wind band that routinely performs music written for wind ensemble and classical transcriptions, jazz, soundtracks, and patriotic selections. The Atlanta Concert Band is the longest continually performing community band in the Atlanta area performing in a wide variety of venues and attracting a wide audience. The Atlanta Concert Band performs up to nine times throughout the year.
Rehearsing and performing regularly with The Atlanta Concert Band will allow high school students to increase their musical acumen while fostering mentorship between adult musicians and high school musicians. Participants can expect a fast-paced performance preparation schedule characteristic of an actively performing community band, enhancing performance readiness, and developing sight reading abilities.
Students participating in the program will be provided will participation-based funding of up to $500.00 per year of involvement. The stipend's intent is to help with expenses related to extended musical education. To receive funding, the student must participate in 60% of scheduled performances in each season and attend 80% of rehearsals leading to performances.
All high school band students in good standing with the ability to attend regular ACB rehearsals are eligible to apply.
